PIET VERBIST QUARTET
Dit nieuwe project is opgezet met de bedoeling om eigen composities te vertolken in een standard jazz line-up van tenor sax, piano, contrabas en drums. De keuze van muzikanten verzekert een uitdagende en opwindende uitvoeringen van het materiaal waarbij de grenzen van het spelen in kwartet worden afgetast.
Inspiratie voor de composities komt uit vele verschillende hoeken, geschreven met het uitgangspunt om zowel de band als het publiek uit te dagen.
Piet Verbist heeft zich jarenlang met de akoestische bas door allerlei stijlen en variaties van muziek begeven en de laatste tijd zijn hieruit heel wat composities ontstaan. Een deel van die composities vonden hun weg in andere bezettingen (o.a. ZYGOMATIK en MAMUTRIO) maar de behoefte aan een akoestische formatie met piano leidde tot het ontstaan van dit nieuwe quartet.
De focus ligt op een gevarieerde jazz stijl met veel interactie tussen de musici.
De composities zijn dan ook uiteenlopend van sfeer en context, gaande van oriëntaals geïnspireerd werk, over moderne modale jazz tot een meer traditionele opvatting. Maar met een originele invalshoek en veel ruimte voor dynamische improvisatie.
De band speelde ondertussen ettelijke concerten, en de reacties van het publiek zijn zeer positief.
Een eerste CD verscheen in november 2018 met de titel: “Suite Réunion”.

This new project was launched as an outlet of original compositions for an acoustic and standard jazz line-up of tenor sax, piano, double bass and drums. The choice of musicians ensures challenging and exciting executions of the material, exploring the boundaries of quartet playing.
Inspiration for the compositions is found in many corners. Written with a angle to challenge the band and the public.
For numbers of years, Piet Verbist has performed with the acoustic bass in various jazzstyles and other music. This resulted lately in a lot of new compositions. Some of these compositions found their way in other bands (including ZYGOMATIK and MAMUTRIO) but the need for an acoustic formation with piano led to the creation of this new quartet.
The focus is on a varied jazz style with a lot of interaction between the musicians.
The compositions are therefore different from atmosphere and context, ranging from oriental-inspired work, to modern modal jazz and into a more traditional concept. But with an original angle and a lot of space for dynamic improvisation.
The band has already been playing quiet a lot of concerts, and the public’s reactions are very positive.
A first CD was released in November 2018, entitled: “Suite Réunion”.

Depuis le début de sa carrière, Piet Verbist s’est illustré dans les styles les plus éclectiques. De ses nombreuses expériences ont émergé des compositions diverses. Certaines d’entre elles ont rejoint des projets comme Zygomatik ou Mamutrio, mais d’autres ont fait naître l’envie d’un nouveau quartet acoustique.
Les compositions de ce nouveau projet entremêlent avec aisance les inspirations orientales et le jazz modal moderne tout en conservant un lien avec tradition. Mais toujours avec un perspective originale et beaucoup de place pour l’improvisation.
Le quartet à déjà joué plusieurs concerts et le public répond avec enthousiasme.
Leur premier CD a été enregistré en février et sortira en novembre 2018 sur le label de jazz américain « Origin Records », intitulé: “Suite Réunion”.
